Current Events- "What's Happening in our World?"
Hello,
It is the second week of February already. Valentines Day is on Saturday and next Monday is another holiday, Presidents Day.
There are many websites and resources online that you can read to "keep up" on current events and to be more informed of events taking place in the world around you.
Browse around Yahoo.com (http://www.yahoo.com/) or National Public Radio's website (http://www.npr.org/). Also, the Tri City Herald website (http://www.tri-cityherald.com/) and the Seattle Times newspaper website (www.seattletimes.com) are good places to find local and Northwest news.
This week's Blog Assignment:
After you have navigated around these pages a little, please do the following by clicking "comment" to leave your reply:
1. Try to locate one happy, positive or "upbeat" news story and copy and paste the link (www.address) in your reply.
2. Try to locate one sad, negative or "depressing" news story and copy and paste the link in your reply.
Happy surfing/reading and have a great week!

Martin Luther King Day Holiday
On Monday, January 19th, we don't have classes and CBC is closed in honor of the Martin Luther King Holiday. Martin Luther King was a great civil rights leader with a powerful dream for equality in America. Here are a few links for you to look at to learn more about Martin Luther King and his famous "I Have a Dream" speech
Step 1:
Read about the holiday and watch the video, then respond to the discussion questions below.

Video of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbUtL_0vAJk
Step 2-- Answer the discussion questions:
1) Why do you think this is a special holiday for all people, especially African-Americans?
2) Do you think Dr. King's message is still relevant (important) today?
3) What part's of Dr. King's speech and life can you relate too?
4) What civil rights leaders are there in your country? Who are they? What did they do?

Happy New Year!
Hello and welcome to 2009!
What is one of your specific goals or "resolutions" for this year?
One of my goals is to not eat seconds as much, especially after the holidays and all the yummy food I've been eating for the past month!
Classes for all students begin Monday, January 12th!

More Holiday News
Hello,
How was your long Thanksgiving weekend? What did you do?
We visited with family in the Seattle area. Here is a picture of the cousins at Grandma's in Auburn.
This week is CASAS Testing and Pre-Registration Week. Don't forget to register for Winter Quarter classes and to ask about the Winterim classes being offered before Christmas (Writing in the morning, Financial Literacy in the evening).
It is hard to believe that we are entering the last month of 2008 already. What are your plans for the Christmas and New Year Holidays? What will you do? Will you travel, spend time with family, work, or just relax at home?
Have a great week!
Jason

Thanksgiving Week
Hello,
This is a picture of my wife, Maren, my oldest son, Jordan, and me in Seattle yesterday at the Seahawks football game. We lost again, but it was a great day anyway!
This is a very short week with only 2 days of classes (Monday and Tuesday). Thursday is Thanksgiving. A time when many families will get together, eat way too much food, watch football and talk about all the many things they are thankful for.
My wife and I talked about what we are thankful for with Calvin, our youngest. Our lists were all amazingly similar:
family
food
fun (toys)
dog and cat
Make a short list of the 3-5 most important things in your life.
Please leave your response by clicking on the "comment" link.
Also, don't forget to test your Turkey Knowledge by taking the Turkey Quiz at:

Have a wonderful, long weekend and come back next week refreshed and ready for the CASAS Reading and Listening tests, pre-registration for winter quarter and the last couple of weeks of fall quarter. Time flies! :-) Ask your teacher about the two Winterim classes:
1. Financial Literacy: 6-9 p.m. at Chase
2. Writing: 9-11 a.m. on the main CBC campus
Take care,
Jason

Career Goals and Pathways
Good morning,
I hope you enjoyed the weekend.
This quarter is almost over and soon it will be 2009.
I know many of you are already planning ahead and thinking about the classes you will need to take in order to meet your career goals.
Please answer the following questions by clicking "comment" at the bottom of this post.
1. What is your "Dream Job"? If you could have any job in the world, what would it be? Why?
2. What is your long-term goal at CBC? Do you have an academic or class plan or have you talked to anyone about a Career Pathway?
3. If you are already retired, cannot work or are not interested in a job or career, what is your "Dream Day"? Describe what a perfect day of not working would be like for you :-)
CBC has many resources and programs to help you reach your academic and career goals. In other words, we can help you get from where you are now to where you want to be!
*Don't forget to ask your teacher about the special writing and financial literacy classes in December.
